Myths vs Facts About Surrogacy in Nigeria

Making Families Surrogacy
When I speak to women, families, and students about surrogacy, the same questions come up. Many ideas about surrogacy come from movies, rumors, or misunderstandings. As a fertility counselor, my job is to replace myths with facts so people can make informed decisions.
At MFSL, we arrange and manage the surrogacy process from education to aftercare. All medical evaluations and procedures are conducted solely by licensed medical partners. Legal contracts are handled by our legal team.
Here are 5 common myths and the facts behind them:
MYTH 1: “Surrogacy means giving away your baby”
FACT: In gestational surrogacy, which is the practice MFSL coordinates, the surrogate carries a pregnancy using an embryo created from the intended parents’ or donors’ gametes. The surrogate has no genetic link to the child. The legal contract, drafted by our legal team, clearly defines parentage from the start.
MYTH 2: “Surrogacy is illegal in Nigeria”
FACT: Nigeria currently has no standalone “Surrogacy Act.” However, surrogacy arrangements are structured through contract law, constitutional rights, and guidance from medical and legal bodies. At MFSL, every journey is managed with legally binding agreements to protect all parties.
MYTH 3: “Only rich people use surrogacy”
FACT: Families consider surrogacy for many medical, social, and personal reasons. MFSL info sessions are open to everyone — intended parents, families, students, and healthcare professionals — because awareness should not be limited by income. Education is free and no-obligation.
MYTH 4: “Surrogates are exploited and have no rights”
FACT: A key part of responsible surrogacy management is protecting rights. Surrogates have the right to a written contract, informed consent, legal advice, privacy and ongoing support. It is to be noted that all discussions during info sessions are confidential. Exploitation thrives in silence. Responsible management means a dedicated coordinator for logistics, communication, and emotional check-ins. Women deserve to know what support looks like before, during, and after the journey.
Why “exploitation” becomes a concern:Exploitation is more likely in informal, undocumented arrangements where there’s no contract, no legal review, and no clear process. That’s exactly what structured management aims to prevent. Rights only protect when people know them and when systems enforce them.
MYTH 5: “MFSL handles medical procedures”
FACT: MFSL arranges and manages the surrogacy process. We do not provide medical care. All medical evaluations, procedures including embryo transfer, and eligibility decisions are made solely by licensed medical partners and clinics.
Final Thought: Misinformation creates fear. Facts create understanding. Whether you’re considering surrogacy for yourself or just want to learn more, start with education. Ask questions. Get facts. Decide on your terms.
